Last week, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman reported that former Boston Bruins star Phil Kessel is hoping to continue his career, even after not securing a contract for the 2023-24 season. Given Kessel's excellent resume, the prospect of him getting another chance in the NHL should not be ruled out.

In the most recent episode of 32 Thoughts: The Podcast, Friedman discussed Kessel being a potential target for the Columbus Blue Jackets.

"Honestly, Kyle, I wondered if there was any chance that Phil Kessel may end up there (Blue Jackets). Just simply because, and I think this is a serious season for Columbus. They were disappointed last year. They want to show some improvement, but I kind of wonder about a guy like Kessel simply because he's got the reputation of being someone who really lightens the mood and just creates a lot of enjoyment when he's around."

Blue Jackets general manager Don Waddell recently told The Athletic's Aaron Portzline that he was ready to add to the club's forward group. Shortly after, he signed former Bruins forward James van Riemsdyk to a one-year, $900,000 contract. However, when looking at their roster, it is apparent that they could use at least one more forward before the start of the season. Thus, a player like Kessel could make sense for them in a depth role.

Furthermore, after the tragic loss of Johnny Gaudreau, Friedman's point about Kessel's ability to lighten the mood and create enjoyment could make him a good fit for Columbus. It is going to be a very tough year for the Blue Jackets, and Kessel could be a good support system for the club's players.

It will be interesting to see if the former Bruins forward ends up being the Blue Jackets' next addition. On paper, it looks like a good fit, but time will tell if it comes to fruition.
