The NHL is losing one of its top coaches.
Winnipeg Jets bench boss Rick Bowness announced his retirement from coaching. It marks the end of an outstanding career.
Bowness, 69, is going out on a high note, as the longtime NHL head coach is one of the NHL's finalists for the Jack Adams Award. He helped lead the Jets to a surprising 52-24-6 record. Even if they fell short in the first round, it does not take away from his successful final year behind the bench.
Bowness spent 38 years in the NHL as a head coach and an assistant. In 803 games as a head coach split between the Winnipeg Jets, Boston Bruins, Ottawa Senators, New York Islanders, Phoenix Coyotes, Dallas Stars, and Jets, he had a 310-408-48-37 record.
Rick BownessWhile Bowness had a losing record as a head coach, it is crucial to note that a significant reason for it was that he coached the Senators during their first seasons in the NHL when they were historically bad. The Islanders and Coyotes were also poor clubs when he coached them.
Bowness spent the 1991-92 season as the head coach of the Bruins, where he posted a 36-32-12 record.
