On trade deadline day, the Boston Bruins dealt defenseman Brandon Carlo to the Toronto Maple Leafs. While it was known that the Bruins were listening to offers for Carlo, it was surprising to see him end up on one of Boston's biggest rivals.
This fact did not escape Carlo, either.
During a phone interview on TSN, Carlo made it clear that he was surprised that he was dealt by the Bruins to the Maple Leafs, given the Original Six clubs' intense rivalry. However, he also shared that he is excited to now be a Leaf.
"Yeah, definitely a shocker when I heard that it was Toronto," Carlo said. "But then, it's pretty interesting that you can kind of look at the group they that got there. Auston Matthews, one of the best goal-scorers if not the best goal-scorer in the game. What an opportunity for me to go in there and try to help this group win."
It is easy to understand why Carlo was surprised that the Bruins traded him to the Maple Leafs. However, it also makes sense that he is excited about heading to Toronto. The Maple Leafs are currently one of the top teams in the NHL, and bringing in a steady shutdown defenseman like Carlo only makes them better.
Carlo is now expected to be a crucial part of the Maple Leafs' top four, just like he was with the Bruins. They needed a dependable stay-at-home defenseman on their right now, and they have gotten a good one in the former Bruin. It will be fascinating to see how much of an impact he makes in Toronto from here, but the Bruins will, without a doubt, miss him.
