As the trade deadline quickly approaches and the Boston Bruins have yet to make a move, more potential targets will start to come off the board. The Bruins went all-in last season and I can't argue with the decision as they were dominant. The team is once again strong, but has work to do.
The Bruins are sitting on $57,500 in cap space at the moment, so if they are to do anything, roster players will have to be moved in order to free up necessary space. This may see Boston part with multiple players they don't necessarily want to, but have to.
While a few names have circulated, conversation is starting to pick up involving Jake DeBrusk. Steve Conroy of the Boston Herald reported on DeBrusk's comments saying that there has been no progress on a contract extension.
If the Bruins feel they won't re-sign DeBrusk, the team has a quick decision to make since he is a UFA after the season and holds value. Neely recently spoke and mentioned the Bruins' needs, expressing that acquiring a "stiff defender" and help on offense are two of the main goals.
With very limited cap space, moving DeBrusk would open up $4 million this season, but would also take offense off the team. If the Bruins make a move like this, they better be sure the team can bring back someone who provides even more offense and is potentially signed past this season. The next week leading up to the trade deadline will determine what happens here.
