The Bruins don't have many assets to work with this season, but Lohrei has started to show that he is the no-cost deadline option the team needs.

Brian Fluharty-USA TODAY Sports - Why Mason Lohrei is Bruins' No-Cost Deadline Upgrade

Mason Lohrei is one of a few of the Boston Bruins' young players who have debuted and not only made a difference, but surprised many this season. The Bruins are once again a top team in the NHL and will be upgrading at the deadline. Last season, with an even more well-rounded team that didn't have injuries, multiple upgrades were made, all for rentals, and it didn't work out.

These upgrades used draft capital for the 2023 NHL Entry Draft, but also for this year as well, using their 2024 first, second, and fourth-round picks. This leaves the Bruins with much less assets to work with when looking to acquire talent to help them for a playoff run this season.

I believe that is just fine since Lohrei has come in and done a great job not only filling in, but fitting in with the Bruins. Hampus Lindholm is considered week-to-week and now Matt Grzelcyk is considered day-to-day. Both are formidable left-shot defenders that, when out of the lineup, leave it pretty empty.

By saying that Lohrei is the Bruins' no-cost deadline upgrade, that doesn't mean that the team shouldn't still upgrade this season for a deep run. Part of this means that teams sometimes have to load up on depth at the trade deadline and address certain areas that need help of a boost. Lohrei comes in as a 23-year-old defender with 29 games of experience already this season and can play top-four minutes.

The Bruins aren't equipped with great trade assets this season since they used a lot of them last season. The young defender can be a great piece in the mix for the remainder of the season and ease some worry or doubts on the back-end with health and an urgency to make major moves.
