The month of August has officially arrived, and with it, hockey season grows ever near.

We're just 59 days away from opening night for the Boston Bruins, yet there remain huge questions about their future at large.

The team has a glut of defensemen, with big decisions needing to be made by training camp. Similarly at forward, the team will have some tough calls to make.

One looming question that's faded to the background during this summer has been who the next captain of the Bruins franchise will be.

The captaincy's been vacant since March 2025 at the NHL Trade Deadline, when the Bruins shipped out then-captain Brad Marchand to the Florida Panthers for a 2028 first-round pick.

The Bruins had David Pastrnak, Charlie McAvoy, and Hampus Lindholm wear 'A's as the team's alternate captains for the 2025-26 season, while a new leadership group coalesced for the franchise.

Boston has not indicated whether or not they will name a captain, but it feels likely that they will. 

Of those three candidates, it feels likeliest that Pastrnak ends up with the 'C'. As the season wore on, it became clear that he's a massive leader for the Bruins, a player the entire squad looks to in big moments.

In clips released from "Behind the B," Pastrnak could be seen ripping apart his team after the first period of the humiliating Game 4 loss to the Buffalo Sabres.

A decision likely won't be revealed until training camp, or even after, but it's a discussion that's surely happening within the organization itself.
