The 2023-24 season has been a tough one for the Buffalo Sabres. One of the many reasons for that has been their inconsistent goaltending. While Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen has taken a big step forward, prospect Devon Levi and veteran Eric Comrie have both struggled when with the NHL squad.

Interestingly, it appears that the Sabres are at least exploring the trade market for another goaltender. According to The Fourth Period's latest Trade Watch List, they are among the suitors for John Gibson (Anaheim Ducks) and Elvis Merzlikins (Columbus Blue Jackets).

    John Gibson

Gibson, 30, has been the subject of trade rumors for several seasons now, but the rebuilding Ducks have yet to move him. At times, the Sabres have been viewed as a possible landing spot for him, and this is only the latest example of that.

However, Gibson also carries a 10-team no-trade list, so he has a bit of a say over where he could end up. With that, he would be more than a rental, as he carries a $6.4 million cap hit until the end of the 2026-27 season.

Gibson has appeared in 33 games this season with the Ducks, where he has a 10-19-1 record, a 3.04 GAA, and a .901 SV%. Overall, he is having a decent bounce-back season but could still benefit from joining a better team.

    Elvis Merzlikins

As for Merzlikins, he requested a trade earlier this season after a significant drop in playing time. When playing at his best level, he is a legitimate starter, and he could be a strong addition to the Sabres' roster if acquired. However, like with Gibson, consistency has been an issue for him at times.

Similar to Gibson, Merzlikins has a 10-team no-trade list and is under contract until the completion of the 2026-27 campaign. However, he has a somewhat cheaper cap hit at $5.4 million.

    Merzlikins has a 9-11-7 record, a 3.21 GAA, and a .904 SV% in 29 games this season.

While the Sabres are keeping an eye on Gibson and Merzlikins, both goalies come with significant risks. They both have expensive cap hits and are locked up for multiple seasons. With that, they have had their struggles as starters. As a result, the Sabres should also be exploring other options.
