The Buffalo Sabres have announced that they have hired Carolina Hurricanes legend Eric Staal as special assistant to the general manager.
Staal, 40, officially retired as a player from the NHL on July 30, 2024, after signing a one-day contract with the Hurricanes. Now, with this news, he is returning to the NHL in a front-office role with the Sabres.
According to the Sabres, Staal "will assist in all aspects of the hockey department, including scouting and direct involvement with players and prospects."
Staal and Sabres general manager Kevyn Adams have history together, as they were teammates on the Hurricanes from 2003-04 to 2006-07. Staal also played for the Sabres as one of Adams' players during the 2020-21 season, posting three goals and 10 points in 32 games. Now, they will have the opportunity to work together in the Sabres' front office.
This is an exciting opportunity for Staal, as the Hurricanes great will now look to help the Sabres get things back on track with his new role. It will be interesting to see if he can do just that from here. When looking at his resume as a player, he has the potential to be a great addition to Buffalo's front office.
