Carolina bolsters its blue line depth with a low-risk gamble on Pierre-Olivier Joseph, signing the former first-round pick.
The Carolina Hurricanes have signed defenseman Pierre-Olivier Joseph to a one-year, $850,000 contract.
The 27-year-old defenseman appeared in 31 games this past season with the Vancouver Canucks and has a total of 225 career NHL games across parts of six seasons with the Canucks, Pittsburgh Penguins and St. Louis Blues.
For his career, the 2017 first-round pick has nine goals and 46 points, 1155 blocks and 217 hits.
Despite playing for the league worst Canucks and dealing with a bit of injury trouble, Joseph had strong underlying numbers in a third-pairing role, which is perhaps the reason why Carolina brought him in.
The league minimum contract carries little risk for the Hurricanes and with the status of Alexander Nikishin still up in the air as training camp approaches, it doesn't hurt to have additional options in the organization.
Joseph is also the team's first and only UFA signing so far this offseason.
