Antti Raanta on Waivers | Goaltending Options for Carolina

For the second time in their last three games, the Carolina Hurricanes lost 2-1 in the shootout.

Tonight they dropped the contest to the Pittsburgh Penguins at PPG Paints Arena.

Teuvo Teravainen scored the lone goal for the Canes while Pyotr Kochetkov stopped 24 of 25.

After the game, Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour along with Jaccob Slavin and Jack Drury spoke with the media in Pittsburgh. Here's what they had to say:

Rod Brind'Amour

On the offensive struggles in regulation: Well they played hard. They blocked a lot of shots, they were in the lanes and we were in the box. We couldn't get any flow going and then in the third period, we were a little flat I think just because a lot of guys hadn't gotten going. I give a lot of credit. Our killers worked really hard tonight. I don't know what to tell you. That penalty on Svech... I mean it's hard enough to play against those guys but to give them a power play like that... anyway. That was really frustrating. Didn't really give us a good chance there, but we dug in. I know that.

On Pyotr Kochetkov: He was solid. He made a lot of great saves. He allowed us to have a chance and that's what he's done here lately.

On losing three games despite being on a six-game point streak: We lost the skills competition. That's it. What are you going to say?

Jaccob Slavin

On getting a point: I think what we can take is hard play. [Kochetkov] played unbelievable again, so we've got goaltending now. And guys were battling hard. It was a bummer that we couldn't get the extra point, but the penalty kill was good tonight so take little things out of it and continue to compete.

On the penalty kill: Just buying in to the way we have to do it. The pressure points that we have and blocking shots is another big part of it. Guys are putting their bodies on the line, so just little details of it, but again, it comes back to compete.

On the areas that have become more consistent: I think one of the big things for us is not giving up as many grade-A chances. I think when we have five guys on the ice doing it the way that we do it, you don't give as many of those up. Kochetkov can make some big saves when he had to, but I think for the most part, we're not giving up as many grade-A chances and keeping the puck out of our zone.

On the defense for both teams: There was good defense on both sides of things. You've got two teams who battle hard and who don't want to be in their zone. That's the game now, trying to get the puck out of your zone as quickly as you can. We had some grind shifts, they had some grind shifts and goalies made saves when they needed to. That's the result you get.

Jack Drury

On the game: The penalty kill did an unbelievable job getting us that point. With five big kills and the one in overtime. I think a lot of credit goes to our penalty kill today.

On positive takeaways: I think D-zone coverage. We kept it pretty tight, which was good. Special teams, obviously the PK. Just keep building on that and try to get a little more o-zone time.

On having a six-game point streak yet having lost three: I think the way we have been playing the last few games is a little bit more the way we want to play, so that's a good thing and we just have to keep building on it. Obviously a huge game coming up against the [New York] Islanders.
