Veteran captain defies age, delivering exceptional offensive output and inspiring leadership. Teammates honor Staal's dedication with the prestigious Steve Chiasson Award.

Carolina Hurricanes captain has been selected by his teammates as the winner of the Steve Chiasson Award for the 2025-26 season.

The Steve Chiasson Award, which honors the late defenseman who tragically died in a car accident in 1999, is given annually to the Hurricanes player that best exemplifies determination and dedication while proving to be an inspiration to his teammates through his performance and approach to the game.

Staal, 37, is in his 20th year in the league, 14th with Carolina and eighth as captain.

Despite being the oldest member of the team, Staal is having one of his best offensive seasons in nearly a decade with 19 goals and 34 points in 74 games.

He's earned a spot back on the power play, while continuing to center the team's shutdown line as well as PK1.

No player has played more games as a Hurricane and Staal also recently skated in his 1,400th career game as well.

This is the fourth time Staal has won the award and first since 2020-21.
