If you follow my colleague Jason Newland on X, you would have seen his coverage of the team’s first media availability of the 2025-26 season.
One of the biggest takeaways from everyone who spoke was that this group wants to be a playoff team this year, and they believe it can be done if everyone buys in.
The goal is the playoffs, but to get there they need to be better on the road. Last season, they went 26-10-5 at home but just 14-23-4 away from Nationwide. If they can bring their road record up to something like 20-17-4, that’s six more wins, which would mean at least 12 extra points.
In a recent NHL.com article, Wes Crosby spoke with Blue Jackets head coach Dean Evason, who said that special teams could be the key to improving their play on the road. At the same time, he admitted it’s on him and the coaching staff to figure out why those issues keep happening.
“Have to get better for us to get more points,” Evason said. “Have we identified exactly what we can do on the road? No. Do we have some thoughts? Yes. ... We will figure it out. We have to figure it out.”
If the Blue Jackets can solve that road problem, they become a playoff team on paper. And once you’re in, anything can happen. But first things first: they need to get there, and the easiest way to start is by tightening up their overall game away from home.
