Welcome to another edition to of Cannon City Quotables.

Last night, the Columbus Blue Jackets played the Colorado Avalanche in a battle with two of the best defensemen in the NHL.

The Blue Jackets aren't off to the best start of the season, they've had some issues on special teams and now are dealing with an early injury bug. Things weren't much better last night as they honoured Cam Atkinson.

They got off to a good start with a goal from Ivan Provorov, but things went south quickly and they lost 4-1. With that, let's take a look at some of the quotes from the players and coaches from the game.

    Columbus Blue Jackets:

    Dean Evason: Head Coach

    • He didn't like how the team played
    • Gave a real good team too many chances
    • Goalie was good, thought that was a positive
    • Felt the team was passive and soft
    • Felt the goal being overturned was the turning point
    • Team needs to be more aggressive, can't sit back
    • Work ethic has to be way higher

    Sean Monahan: 2 S, 18:04 TOI

    • Thinks the team needs to play harder and better
    • Need to find ways to win
    • Dropped a gear after the first period
    • Doesn't matter if the Avs are the "better team", need to play better "we are all in the same league."
    • Wins come down to work and compete
    • Not overly worried about the slow start to the season

    Elvis Merzlikins: 32/35, .914 SV%

    • Colorado put pressure on right after the first CBJ goal
    • A few unfortunate goals go in against him
    • Team knows the mistakes, but it's okay they will move on
    • Deflections are hard to save for any goalie in the league
    • Felt better after he made a few saves to rebound from letting a few goals in
    • Doesn't think CBJ is that different than the Avs. Last names are different, but the team has a ton of work ethic.
    • Team may not have played well enough, mentioned they are human beings
    • Their mindset is on to the next one and get ready for Tampa

    Ivan Provorov: 1 G, 1 S, -2, 24:56 TOI

    • Felt the team made it difficult on themselves
    • Not a ref so can't comment on the disallowed goals
    • Team played good in the last three games, but didn't play as well last night
    • First half of the game was sloppy, second half he felt it got better

    Colorado Avalanche:

    Jared Bednar: Head Coach

    • Team did some good things
    • They wanted to finish off the road trip with a win
    • Second period was the best period for the team
    • Defensively they did the little things well
    • Makar had a great night, his goal was big for the team
    • Team built momentum off the first period, which led to the win

    Gabriel Landeskog: 1 A, +1, 1 H, 16:07 TOI

    • Better effort as a group
    • Offensive zone time made a huge difference
    • Liked the team game from the start
    • Felt the team took over from the second period
    • Felt the goal with 3 seconds left in the second, was hard on CBJ

    Brock Nelson: 1 G, 2 S, +2, 2 H, 16:46 TOI

    • Doesn't feel the team has had the best start to the season
    • Felt the team did play well tonight
    • Felt his line was the most dangerous line
    • Enjoys playing with Brent Burns
    • Wedgwood played very well and at times kept them in the game

    Scott Wedgwood: 22/23, .957 SV%

    • Said a slapshot caught him up high in the collarbone
    • Never thought about coming out of the game
    • Proud of the team
    • Felt the team responded well after giving up the first goal of the game

What's Next for the Blue Jackets?

The Blue Jackets are back in action against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday, Oct. 18, at home. They are looking to bounce back and close out their home stand with a win. After that, they head to Dallas on Oct. 21 before returning home to host the Washington Capitals on Oct. 24.

They currently sit tied for last in the Metro Division with the New York Islanders. They have a 1-3-0 record for just two points on the season. They will need to tighten things up and get back to playing their game if they want to turn around a poor start to the season.
