The Dallas Stars dropped Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals at home, but the 3-0 loss was not the biggest blow the Stars suffered.

Early in the third period, a whistle was blown mid-play due to Roope Hintz down on the ground, writhing in the pain in front of the Edmonton Oilers net. The play had moved on, so at first there was a bit of confusion on what lead to him grabbing is ankle/foot area. Upon replay, it was determined that Darnell Nurse took a huge slash at the top of Hintz's foot.
Due to the confusing nature of the play, the call on the ice was a major so that the play could be reviewed. Upon review, the refs came back and ruled that it was just a slashing minor and the Stars would have a two minute man-advantage. However, Hintz went down the tunnel and did not return to the game.
While the ruling on the ice was in a bit of a gray area, with arguments that it was the right call or could have been upgraded to a major penalty, the real concern was losing Hintz for any amount of time. He has a history of foot and ankle injuries, playing throughout the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs with a fractured ankle.
After the game, head coach Pete DeBoer was asked about his feelings on the slash and he stated, "I'll answer your question with a question. Does anyone in this room think that if Connor McDavid gets carried off the ice like that, that it's not a five minute major?"
The last line of any potential discipline could come from the NHL's Department of Player Safety for either a fine or a potential suspension. However, it was announced this morning that there would be no further discipline for the slash. There was also no update on Hintz today, DeBoer stated they were still awaiting testing to see if Hintz could travel with the team to Edmonton for Game 3 tomorrow.
