The first day of free agency is in full swing, though the Dallas Stars did not have much wiggle room coming into July. However, the Stars announced they are bringing back a familiar face in Colin Blackwell. Blackwell signed a two-year extension at $775 thousand per year.

Blackwell joined the Stars last year on July 1, after parting ways with the Chicago Blackhawks and hitting the market. Blackwell has also spent time with the Nasvhille Predators, New York Rangers, Seattle Kraken and Toronto Maple Leafs.

The 32 year-old played on the fourth-line for Dallas and some times found himself as the odd man out. However, he is a beast on the penalty kill and adds a huge jolt of energy when he is in the lineup. While Blackwell was occasionally a healthy scracth, he played 63 games during the regular season, which is the most in his career that he has played in one season.

In those 63 games, he tallied six goals, 11 assists and 17 points, just five points shy of his career best which he recorded during his time with the Rangers. Blackwell also adds veteran leadership to the Stars, whose roster is a mix of veterans and young players.

The clock is still ticking on the first day of free agency, it is unclear if the Stars make any more signings.
