It’s the most wonderful time of the year.

This summer will (hopefully) be one of change for the Dallas Stars. After deciding to move on from head coach Pete DeBoer and reportedly naming his successor (yet to be officially announced), more change is on the way.

Ironically, the Stars will need to trade some players in order to keep others.

The biggest obstacle the Stars currently face is their salary cap. After offering an extension to their captain, Jamie Benn, last week, they are left with less than one million dollars in cap space. $980,840 to be exact.

This just won’t cut it, especially with reports coming out that the team wants to keep newcomer Mikael Granlund around. Both Pierre Lebrun and David Pagnotta have reported this information.

During the 2024-25 regular season, Granlund produced 66 points in 83 games. For the Stars specifically, he recorded 21 points in 31 games. In the postseason, he was good for 10 points in 18 games.

He’s also coming off a four-year contract that paid him $5-million per season. Sadly for the Stars, this presents them with a few tough decisions to make.

To give Granlund a similar contract, the Stars likely need to move out two players who make less than $5 million. Matt Dumba, Ilya Lyubushkin, and Sam Steel could all be players who don’t suit up in a Stars jersey next year, in order to make room.

The most wonderful time of the year, indeed.
