Red Wings Defenseman Jake Walman received a $2,500 fine for a high stick to Jeff Skinner on Tuesday night

On Wednesday morning, the NHL's Department of Player Safety announced that it would be fining Detroit Red Wings defenseman Jake Walman $2,500 for high-sticking Buffalo Sabres forward Jeff Skinner.

The incident came late in Tuesday night's 5-3 Detroit win in Buffalo, and Walman was assessed a two-minute minor for cross-checking, which afforded the Sabres a power play with the chance to equalize with 1:51 to play.  (Instead, Dylan Larkin clinched the game for the Red Wings with an empty-net goal). 

Though both the Department of Player Safety's statement and the in-game penalty framed the play as a high-stick, it could perhaps more accurately be described as a cross-check, which makes it a bit easier to understand why Walman received a fine.

The money from the fine goes the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.
