The circumstances were perhaps not in the Detroit Red Wings' favor as the horn sounded on regulation in Sunrise, and the game was tied at two.  Detroit had lost 10 straight to the Florida Panthers, not having beaten the Ice Cats since there were no fans in the stands during the 2020-21 bubble season.  The Red Wings were also just 3-5 on the season in overtime (excluding shootouts)

But, thanks to a late hook from Aaron Ekblad on Alex DeBrincat, Detroit would begin the extra session with a four-on-three manpower advantage, an advantage upon which they would capitalize.

With that power play at risk of expiring without incident, David Perron won a battle in the corner and played a pass to Shayne Gostisbehere at the point.  Gostisbehere found Dylan Larkin on the right flank, and the Red Wing captain—in no hurry—drifted toward the slot before uncorking a wrist shot that beat Sergei Bobrovsky and secured a 3-2 victory for the visitors.

The Red Wings have now won six of seven games in the new year, and this evening's victory propelled Detroit to third in the Atlantic Division by points with 51, slipping past the Toronto Maple Leafs at 50 (who admittedly have played two fewer games).

After a dreadful December, January has been much kinder to the Red Wings, who now find themselves back in the thick of the playoff hunt in the East.  Detroit will return to action Friday night in Carolina, taking on the Hurricanes.
