Last night in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, the hometown Warriors bested the visiting Portland Winterhawks 4-3 in overtime, bringing Moose Jaw to within one game of a WHL Championship and Memorial Cup berth.
In the losing effort, Red Wings prospect Nate Danielson (ninth overall draft pick in 2023) did his best to keep Portland afloat, including chipping in a dazzling short-handed goal. He drove hard to the net, toe dragged across the slot, then tucked in a backhand in the first period of last night's game.
Danielson has been the Winterhawks' primary offensive driver all postseason. His seven goals are tied for the team lead. His 16 assists lead the team by seven over second place. His 23 points are also a team high. Danielson also has a +14 rating and has won 51.4% of his face-offs.
After last night's defeat, Danielson and Portland now face elimination tonight in Moose Jaw. To keep the season going, the Winterhawks will need to win tonight at the Moose Jaw Events Centre, then repeat the feat on Friday.
