One prominent Oilers commentator brought up the prospect of the club making a blockbuster trade with the Flames.
After a brutal start to the season, the Edmonton Oilers have turned things around big time. They currently sport a franchise-record 14-game winning streak and are third in the Pacific Division with a 27-15-1 record. Because of this, they are surely going to be buyers at the deadline.
With the deadline rapidly approaching, trade talk centering around the Oilers has been picking up. While adding a goalie to support Stuart Skinner has been an ongoing talking point, could the Oilers go in a different direction because of the young netminder's recent outstanding play?
In a recent episode of Oilers NOW with Bob Stauffer, Stauffer argued that the Oilers' top trade target leading up to the deadline should be Calgary Flames center Elias Lindholm.
Stauffer then discussed the possibility of the Oilers sending their 2024 first-round pick, Xavier Bourgault, and Brett Kulak to acquire Lindholm with half of his $4.8 million cap hit retained.
Bringing in a high-impact forward like Lindholm would certainly be a big move for the Oilers. If Leon Draisaitl was moved to the wing, he could take over the second-line center role if acquired. However, he also could be a strong option to be their 3C or even play right wing in their top six due to his versatility.
However, a notable obstacle in a potential move is that the Flames and Oilers are, of course, huge rivals. Yet, they have also made deals in the past, and Lindholm has an expiring deal, so the Flames could be open to a potential trade if the offer is right.
Nevertheless, this is a pretty intriguing trade idea from Stauffer. While it does not mean that the Oilers are actively pursuing him, seeing him become an Oiler before the deadline passes would be very interesting.
