EDMONTON -- Hockey fans are losing their minds over Connor McDavid.

The Edmonton Oilers captain is putting the team on his back and willing them one game closer to history. If he wasn't the clear favorite to win the Conn Smythe Trophy for the most valuable player in the playoffs, he should be a slam dunk now.

McDavid has posted two back-to-back four point nights while fighting off elimination. He has 42 points this playoff run, five shy of tying Wayne Gretzky's all-time record of 47.

In the dying seconds of Game five, Zach Hyman flips the puck out of the Oilers zone toward the empty Florida Panthers net. Matthew Tkachuk makes an incredible defensive play to stop the goal.

Then McDavid happened.

Oliver Ekman-Larsson completely relaxes, and then McDavid gathers the loose puck and fires it past Tkachuk to put the nail in the coffin.

The crowd goes from pure elation to complete silence. With 17 seconds remaining in the game, this empty net goal sealed the team's fate.

And forced the Panthers' back to Alberta.

Panthers' general manager Bill Zito was not impressed. After McDavid secured the win for the Oilers, the above video was taken of Zito throwing a water bottle in frustration.

Not only is McDavid pissing off opposing players - opposing general managers are expressing their frustration too.

It's the Stanley Cup Final, emotions are high everywhere. Everyone knows what's at stake. The Panthers were in the Final last year and came up short.

The hockey world will have to wait to see if history repeats itself.
