How Evander Kane's health will directly play into the future of two young Edmonton Oilers' players.

EDMONTON -- The summer just got a whole lot spicier.

The Edmonton Oilers youngsters Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway signed offer sheets with the St. Louis Blues this morning. Now the Oilers have seven days to make a decision on both of these players.

They could either match the offer sheets or accept compensation from the Blues. They could match one and not the other, as well. Either way, it puts the team in a bit of a bind.
Complicating matters further is the health of forward Evander Kane.
If the recent reports are true and he will go on LTIR after having surgery, that bodes well for the team. It will free up his $5.125-million to fit both Broberg and Holloway under the salary cap.

If he refuses and deems himself healthy at the start of training camp, it forces the team to make hard decisions. Getting an understanding of what Kane's health status is must be the top priority for General Manager Stan Bowman.

Losing both young players would be a tragic misstep for the organization. Developing young players hasn't been their strong suit. If they don't keep the players, it will be another ugly stain on an organization that doesn't have the best track record with young players.
It is going to be an interesting seven days in Oil Country. It's time for Bowman to show what he's made of.
