EDMONTON -- Hockey is a strange game.

It's filled with a lot of luck and a lot of superstition. One Edmonton Oilers forward has a few of those under his belt. Corey Perry was a guest on After Hours last night following the 3-1 loss to the Vancouver Canucks at home.

A few minutes into his interview, Perry received a video question from an old teammate of his - Kevin Bieksa. The two played together for the Anaheim Ducks, and Bieksa asked Perry to share the origins of the "stick in the garbage can" superstition.

When asking his question Bieksa detailed what exactly the superstition is, "I didn't talk to you on game day because you had so much going on - but one of my favorite superstitions that you had was the 'garbage can' thing."

"So when you were struggling for goals - you would put your stick in the garbage can in the middle of the room before the game. You would encourage guys to throw stuff in the garbage, to spit in it, to dump their drinks in there - and that for you was symbolic of, you were going to get a greasy goal, a garbage goal and that was going to get you out of your slump."

After some laughs Perry took some time to answer about the origins of that superstition, "the stick in the garbage can, that's been going on for a long, long time. I've already done it here a few times and guys are looking at me like 'what?'"

While he didn't directly answer the question - he said that he's been doing it for a very long time. My assumption is that he learned it from someone, or he made it up himself in the dressing room.

Either way it's worked for him, as Perry has 398 goals in 1170 career games. With three games of the regular season left, he could still hit 400 career goals before the playoffs roll around.
