The hulking Swedish defender has been a stabilizing force on the Oilers blue line. At the same time his career has been given a boost by working in tandem with offensive maestro, Evan Bouchard.
Ekholm came over from the Nashville Predators in the 2023 trade deadline. With Tyson Barrie going the other way, they lost a great teammate. Ekholm has brought his own flare and leadership since being acquired.
The latest moment that has won over even more fans, just surfaced last night.
Some fans know about Oilers+, the streaming service aimed at delivering exclusive content for a monthly subscription. One fan clipped a genuine heartfelt moment between Ekholm and Oilers general manager Ken Holland in the wake of their Game six victory over the Dallas Stars.
"Thanks for trading for me," reads the on-screen subtitles for the clip. As the words escape his mouth, you can see the emotion on his face. A combination of joy and gratitude collide, and the sincerity of it is palpable.
Ekholm is a horse on the ice. He plays in all situations and possesses an underrated offensive game. On top of that, he is incredibly honest and (as seen in the above clip) really cares about the team and the opportunity that is in front of him.
