EDMONTON -- Hockey can be a cruel game sometimes.

The Edmonton Oilers went into last night's game against their Pacific Division rivals, the Vancouver Canucks with a chip on their shoulders. Things didn't pan out for them as the 3-1 final score suggests. It was a tight match up with both teams stifling their oppositions opportunities.

"Tight game obviously. I thought we played well, stretches where they played well, just a tight playoff-like game," was how Zach Hyman recounted the game to the media following the loss.

Lost in the shuffle of the loss, was the fact that this game was incredibly physical for both squads. There was 92 hits recorded between the two teams - with the Oilers throwing 42 and the Canucks landing 50 of their own.

The Oilers had six players record four hits or more during last night's game: Evander Kane, Dylan Holloway, Sam Carrick, Evan Bouchard, Cody Ceci and Hyman.

Kane had himself a game - and has been playing better since I started becoming more and more critical of his performances lately. He played 19:54, threw four hits and scored the team's only goal.

He was also took a bit of a beating - with a big hit coming against him from Canucks defender Carson Soucy.

Kane took exception to the hit - attempting to start a fight with the Canucks defender. That didn't led to anything, but not for lack of trying on Kane's part. He shoved Soucy rigorously after both players got up. The aftermath of the hit on Kane looked more like two players getting up from a wrestling match than a hit along the boards.

He has ratcheted up the intensity in his last three games - having thrown 13 hits over that time. This is more of what Kane needs to do to keep himself engaged from game to game and in playoff form.
