There has been natural turnover with the likes of Corey Perry and Connor Brown moving on to new organizations. They have also brought in the likes of Ike (Isaac) Howard and Andrew Mangiapane.

The coaching staff is also experiencing turnover. Glen Gulutzan is the new head coach of the Dallas Stars. David Pelletier joined his coaching staff as an assistant coach.

However, a new report released on Monday shows that the Oilers may have decided on one vacant coaching position.

Jeff Marek has reported that the Oilers will name Paul McFarland as assistant coach. McFarland has spent the last season as head coach of the WHL’s Calgary Hitmen.

*UPDATE: The Oilers have named McFarland their new assistant coach. They have also named Peter Aubrey their new goalie coach.

McFarland started his coaching career in the OHL, first as an assistant coach with the Oshawa Generals for two seasons and then with the Kingston Frontenacs. He served as their head coach for three seasons, leading them to the playoffs in each year.

He’s been an assistant coach at the NHL level several times. McFarland coached for the Florida Panthers, Toronto Maple Leafs, and, most recently, under Dave Hakstol with the Seattle Kraken.

With the Kraken, he was in charge of the forward group and the powerplay. So, if this report turns into reality, the Oilers have found their Gulutzan replacement.

McFarland has given presentations at The Coaches Site Live annual coaching conferences. In 2022, he gave a presentation titled “The Importance of Zone Entries and Attacking off the Rush.”
