This is a perfect example of what not to do when you see any of the Edmonton Oilers around town.

EDMONTON -- Everyone deserves privacy.
Athletes bring entertainment to the masses. With that exposure comes a certain expectation to interact with fans. However, there is a right way to do it and a wrong way to do it.

The Edmonton Oilers' captain, Connor McDavid, had his privacy infringed upon on Sunday.
There is a video circulating social media that features McDavid and his fiancee Lauren, packing their vehicle with alcohol they just purchased. Judging by McDavid's suit, this happened on Sunday night after their Game six win over the Dallas Stars.
I'm not going to share the video, but I will describe to you what happened in it.

The fans in the video did not interact with McDavid in a respectable fashion. There were three fans in total in the clip. Each one at different points of the video were saying "thank you, thank you" - which was the least invasive thing they did.
Several of them patted him on the back. As McDavid was about to get into the driver's seat the person taking the video said, "give me a hug." McDavid very hesitantly (and awkwardly) allowed a part of himself to be hugged.

This is not okay.
It's one thing to ask a hockey player (or any other celebrity) for a picture or autograph, but taking a video of you invading their personal space is crossing a line.

Let's not forget that hockey players are people and not just puppets who sing and dance at our whims. They deserve their own time and space. And if you do it respectfully, they can certainly sign an autograph or take a picture with you.
Fans today want to feel close to their idols. That's why celebrities like Dwayne Johnson are so popular - they use social media to engage with and interact with their fanbase.

If you want to get close to your favorite hockey player, the best time is at the rink or an event where they are expecting to interact with fans. Do not do what the fans in this video did.
Smile, nod, wave, say "good game" or "Go Oilers'". Anything more than that is going too far.
