With the blueline returning to full health, Minnesota loses a promising young defenseman to a division rival as roster crunches and salary cap gymnastics force a difficult departure.
The Minnesota Wild announced a roster move on Friday. The Wild placed defenseman Daemon Hunt on waivers. Minnesota got back defensemen Olli Maatta and Jared Spurgeon on Thursday for its game against the Calgary Flames and sent down Carson Lambos.
Unfortunately for the Wild, the Nashville Predators claimed Hunt off waivers.
Hunt, 24, has played 11 games this year for the Wild and has zero points. He is second on the Wild in expected goals for defensemen behind Quinn Hughes, according to Moneypuck.
Wild head coach John Hynes said they had to make “difficult” decisions with the blueline. Matt Kiersted has been elevating his game. David Spacek would have also been claimed off waivers and now the Wild also get a tiny bit more cap flexibility.
