Montreal Canadiens goaltender Jakub Dobes had an unexpected encounter last weekend...

Montreal Canadiens goaltender Jakub Dobes is back in town, and while he’s of course spending a fair amount of time on his summer training at the CN Sports Complex in Brossard, he’s also enjoying the summer activities Montreal has to offer.

This past weekend, he was spotted at Osheaga Festival enjoying Tate McRae’s gig with teammate Jayden Struble, but he was also present at the Omnium Banque Nationale and exchanged serves with tennis pro Casper Ruud.

However, he had an unexpected encounter when he crossed paths with Quebec comedian Mariana Mazza. The humorist, who does stand-up comedy and has appeared in movies such as Bon Cop, Bad Cop 2 and De Pere en Flic 2, is known for her brash sense of humor. She approached him and asked: Sir, am I the first person to tell you you’re simply Dobes (to the tune of Tina Turner’s Simply the Best), better than all the rest…

The goaltender didn’t seem to know who Mazza was, but played along with her, being as nice as he always is, even though he looked a bit puzzled by the “performance”. Mazza might have been the first person to tell him he was “simply Dobes”, but she certainly wasn’t the first one to sing that about the netminder.

The song was regularly played on BPM Sports during the Canadiens’ fantastic playoff run. It seems that the Montreal media have now fully adopted Dobes and are keen to catch his every move, not unlike with Samuel Montembeault last summer. The Canadiens’ former number one had plenty of media coverage last summer and starred in a McDonald’s advert before the start of the season. The attention might have been a bit too much for the Quebecer, who said he put too much pressure on himself last year, which was the root cause of his issues in net. Hopefully, Dobes doesn’t react the same way to the extra attention he’s getting.
