It was the worst-case scenario for New Jersey Devils defenseman Seamus Casey, whose season was cut short by injury last year.
During the second period of Thursday night’s game against the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden, the 22-year-old defenseman collided with an opposing player and left the game with an injury.
Following the Devils’ 4-3 shootout loss, head coach Sheldon Keefe told NJD.TV that the defenseman will miss some time.
"He is going to need to get evaluated," Keefe said. "Don’t have exact word on status, nobody knows at this point. We will have to get him looked at. He is going to miss some time, we just don’t know the extent of it.”
In an exclusive interview with The Hockey News earlier this month, Casey spoke about how injuries have prevented him from playing as many games as he would have liked throughout his career.
“I have to put together more,” Casey said. “I am in the last year of an entry-level deal; it is time to put together a real year. Obviously, injuries you can't predict these kinds of things. But that is what I really want to do.”
Earlier in Thursday’s game, Casey recorded his first point of the preseason, picking up the primary assist on Stefan Noesen’s power-play goal.
The Devils will play one final exhibition game on Saturday against the New York Islanders before kicking off the 2026-27 regular season on Oct. 1.
