New Jersey Devils forward Nathan Bastian suffered a jaw injury with 4:45 remaining in the first period.
The New Jersey Devils lost another depth forward.
Nathan Bastian suffered a jaw injury after coming to the defense of Paul Cotter and fighting Calgary Flames forward Ryan Lomberg in the first period of Friday night's game.
As Cotter entered the offensive zone, Flames' defenseman Brayden Pachal hit him along the boards. As the Devils forward was falling to the ice, Lomberg hit him and subsequently landed on top of him. Bastian wasted no time skating over to defend his teammate and occasional linemate.
"Growing up, I was never a fighter," Bastian told The Hockey News last season. "You know, still, I am not really a fighter, but that being said, I am willing to stick up for my teammates."
Bastian received the following penalties: instigator (two minutes), fighting (five minutes), and a 10-minute misconduct. He never returned in the second period.
During the second intermission, the organization announced that Bastian sustained a jaw injury and would not return. Devils head coach Sheldon Keefe did not provide any further updates after the game.
The Devils are also without forward Curtis Lazar, who is out indefinitely after undergoing a knee procedure on Oct. 31.
The Devils have one extra forward with them on this Western Canada road trip, Kurtis MacDermid. The team will wrap up their road trip against the Edmonton Oilers on Monday night.
