While many of this year's unrestricted free agents (UFAs) have been signed, there are some players who hit the market who are still looking for their new homes. Among them is former New Jersey Devils forward Kevin Rooney.

Rooney, 32, spent this past season with the Calgary Flames. In a career-high 70 games with the Pacific Division club during the 2024-25 campaign, he recorded five goals, five assists, 10 points, 109 hits, and a minus-6 rating. Overall, the Canton, Massachusetts native was a solid part of the Flames' bottom six, but they elected not to bring him back. Now, the former Devil remains a UFA with August almost here.

Teams looking for more forward depth and grit could consider bringing in Rooney, whether that is through a one-year contract or a professional tryout (PTO) offer. The 6-foot-2 forward also works on the penalty kill, so he could help a team in that area as well.

In 95 games over four seasons with the Devils from 2016-17 to 2019-20, Rooney recorded 10 goals, nine assists, 19 points, 147 hits, and a plus-1 rating. His time with the Devils ended when he signed a two-year, $1.5 million contract with the New York Rangers during the 2020 NHL off-season.

When noting that Gritsyuk is considered one of the Devils' most promising prospects, it was significant that they were able to get him officially signed.
