The Toronto Maple Leafs continued their dominance in their series against the Philadelphia Flyers, taking a 6-2 win at the Wells Fargo Center.
Owen Tippett and Tyson Foerster netted goals for the Flyers, while Tyler Bertuzzi, Pontus Holmberg, and Timothy Liljegren got on the scoresheet for the Maple Leafs. This win marks the eighth consecutive victory for the Leafs in their series against the Flyers.
This game was the second of head coach John Tortorella's two-game suspension, making him available to resume regular coaching duties in the Flyers' next game against the Boston Bruins on Saturday.
"We'll take our lessons from this game and move on," assistant coach Brad Shaw said. "We have to approach these games one game at a time. This isn't the result we wanted or the effort we wanted, but let's move on and focus on Saturday. That's exactly how we all feel right now."
Bertuzzi struck first in the game, recording his 13th goal of the season.
Pontus Holmberg piled on soon after, getting the Leafs' second of the game and his fourth of the season.
Then, Timothy Liljegren got in on the scoring action with the Leafs' third goal in just the first period.
Owen Tippett was able to pull one back for the Flyers on their power play, nabbing his 24th of the season.
The Leafs were nowhere near done, however, with Auston Matthews (55) and William Nylander (35) scoring in quick succession to put Toronto up 5-1 in the third period.
"One of our strengths this year has been our resilience mentally," Shaw said. "When a bad thing happened, a goal goes in the net, we seem to be able to weather the storm and gather ourselves and get back on the attack. For whatever reason, they put another one in the net right away. It just feels like a bit of a tsunami coming at you. We've done such a good job of staying away from those scenarios throughout the year. There's no explanation for it."
Matthew Knies then cashed in to make it 6-1.
Tyson Foerster was able to score a shorthanded goal for his 17th of the season, and extending the Flyers' record of having the most shorthanded goals in the league to 15.
The Flyers will travel up to New England for their next game, taking on the Boston Bruins on Mar. 16 at 7:00 p.m. EST.
