On the same list that mentioned Philadelphia Flyers forward Cam Atkinson as a buyout candidate, goaltender Cal Petersen—who is currently playing with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms in the AHL—made an appearance.
It's unlikely that Petersen will make another appearance for the Flyers, as the goaltending tandem of Sam Ersson and Ivan Fedotov looks to be the pair the team are going with for the upcoming season.
Petersen was one of the rotating cast of characters that passed through the Flyers in the quest to find a backup for Sam Ersson in the second half of the 2023-24 season, and in just five games played, he did not wow fans or the coaches, leading him to return to the AHL for the remainder of the season.
On Frank Seravalli's list, he acknowledges that the Flyers "don't have a ton of salary cap maneuverability on paper, unless they want to operate in LTIR again with Ryan Ellis' $6.2 million or Ryan Johansen's $4 million."
With one year remaining on his current deal, which has a $5 million AAV, one suggestion Seravalli makes is to buy out Petersen and create $2.85 million in cap space.
On the other hand, Seravalli suggests that the favorable option might be to "grind through" the last year of Petersen's contract. Either way, he writes that the Flyers "haven't made up their mind yet."
