Lawyers for the five former members of Team Canada's 2018 World Juniors team charged with sexual assault were told on Tuesday that a trial date would not be set before Aug. 13, according to a new report from Rick Westhead.
It was also reported that due to the backlog in the court system, it's "doubtful" that the trial will begin before "late April 2025 at the earliest" and that the trial is "expected to take at least two months."
The five accused players, including Philadelphia Flyers goalie Carter Hart, were charged back in January after taking leaves of absence from their respective teams.
The projected timeframe for the start of this trial raises questions surrounding the three players whose contracts expire this year—including Hart—and how their teams can address their deals.
As of right now, all five players are considered reserves for their team. Per a statement made by Flyers GM Danny Briere in January, the individual teams are not allowed to comment on the situation and all questions regarding the impending trial will be fielded by the NHL.
