Megan DeRuchie-The Hockey News - Jett Luchanko Is Taking It All In As He Settles In At Flyers Development Camp

Jett Luchanko has had a whirlwind week since getting drafted 13th overall to the Philadelphia Flyers on June 28, with very little time to rest between his draft day in Las Vegas and his first day of Flyers development camp.

He's already been able to interact with some members of the Flyers team, including a brief conversation with head coach John Tortorella, and introductions with senior players like Joel Farabee and Cam York, who were at the Flyers' practice facility getting in some offseason workouts and stopped in the rink to watch some of the camp drills.

It's natural for a 17-year-old like Luchanko to feel a little overwhelmed by the whole experience, but Flyers Director of Player Development Riley Armstrong believes he's been able to showcase his abilities in spite of the nerves.

"You could tell he's a little bit nervous, but I think that comes with the nature of the territory too, his first little camp here and also being a first round pick, so there's a little bit of added pressure there," Armstrong said. "But we talk him through that stuff and help him adjust and understand kind of who he is as a player. He looks good out here, that first little skate we did. You can tell his strength is skating, he can fly up and down the rink."

This isn't Armstrong's first encounter with Luchanko, either. While performing a routine check-in on the London Knights' Oliver Bonk and Denver Barkey—who were drafted by the Flyers back in 2023—the Knights just so happened to be playing the Guelph Storm, where Luchanko was a standout player.

"Going into the game, I'm never really [thinking about], 'Oh, who's the next draft class coming up,'" Armstrong recounted. "But I constantly was checking Elite Prospects being like, 'Who's this number seven on the Guelph Storm?'"

Bonk said that he and his Knights teammates were also well aware of Luchanko during the season, revealing that London referred to him as "a one-man power play break-in...because they'd just sling it back to him, it's one against four, and he'd skate it every time. He's a special player."

Luchanko has been one to watch at development camp, giving fans a glimpse into his skillset—most notable, his remarkable speed and skating abilities.

"We feel he's just starting to tap his potential," Flyers GM Danny Briere said of Luchanko. "He's always one of the hardest workers on both sides of the ice. His vision [and] his hockey sense are high-end. There's obviously some things that we'll work with them to develop, but to have a guy already understand both sides of the ice the way he does, and then you look at the way he played—[Guelph] was a team that just barely made the playoffs, and he was the engine for that team, he drove the play. That's really exciting for us."

For Luchanko, he's still trying to wrap his head around everything that's gone on in the past week, but that hasn't taken away from what he regards as a pretty exhilarating time in his life.

"I'm not sure if it's really sunk in yet because it's been really busy, but it's a really exciting time and I'm really grateful to be here," he said. "I'm just trying to work hard every single day, and I think good things come from that."
