In a conversation with Philly Hockey Now, Philadelphia Flyers GM Danny Briere revealed an update regarding Ryan Johansen's confusing transactions.
"He claimed to be injured when we traded for him, so we had him see the doctors," Flyers general manager Danny Briere told Philly Hockey Now in a phone interview. "They found an injury, so now he's going to be rehabbing. You can't send down a player who's injured, so he's going to be doing rehab until… we don't know when. That's about all I can say at this time, or all that I have. So, he's back on our roster doing rehab and trying to get better."
While Briere didn't confirm the report of a hip injury, he confirmed the player's timeline, telling the Flyers he was injured.
There is some confusion about when his injury happened as he played and finished his final game with the Colorado Avalanche on March 4th. He only had 10:58 of ice time in that game.
"Yes, that's fair to say," Briere said about if the Flyers were caught off guard about the injury.
Philly cannot send down an injured player, so Johansen wasn't sent to the AHL. After initially being listed on the AHL transaction page, he was recently added to the Flyers NHL Roster on the official NHL Media Site.
There is also the question of the relationship between head coach John Tortorella and Johansen. There is some thought from Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman that history could've played a role in the Flyers, saying that he won't play for the team.
"I don't know. As far as I know, I haven't heard of any communication between Ryan and John," Briere explained. "I don't know for sure; they could have been talking to each other. But as far as I know, no, there hasn't been any discussion."
There is still a lot of confusion surrounding the situation. If the Flyers want to buy Johansen out of the remainder of his contract, something that Friedman put on the table in his report, they won't be able to if he is still injured.
