The NHL announced the 32 nominees for the 2023-24 King Clancy Memorial Trophy, with Scott Laughton being the Philadelphia Flyers' nominee.
The King Clancy Memorial Trophy is awarded "to the player who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and has made a noteworthy humanitarian contribution in his community."
Laughton serves as an alternate captain for the Flyers, and was the only player with a letter on their jersey prior to Sean Couturier officially being named captain back in February. He skated in all 82 games this season, including his 600th NHL game on Apr. 13. He led the Flyers and and the league with career-high eight shorthanded points, along with career highs in assists (26), shorthanded assists (6), along with tying his career-high numbers in game-winning goals (2) and powerplay assists (4).
He is also one of the most active Flyers players in the Philadelphia community. He served as an ambassador for the NGHL's "You Can Play" program, as well as the Alphabet Sports Collective, a Canada-based, queer-led non-profit organization. His championing of inclusion for members of the LGBTQ+ continued to shine through his commitment to the Flyers Pride Initiative, "which saw more than 80 individuals from the LGBTQ+ community at 20 Flyers home games and 50-plus guests following the Flyers Pride Game on Jan. 9." Laughton, along with teammates Joel Farabee and Cam Atkinson, also visited the Mazzoni Center, "Philadelphia's premier LGBTQ+ health and wellness center."
He is also incredibly involved with Ronald McDonald House. Laughton and his wife helped design and financially support a Flyers-themed playroom for the Philadelphia location, which provides "board, meals, and entertainment" for families that have children receiving medical treatment.
Other charitable causes include hosting a USO skate at the Flyers Training Center with over 50 active duty servicemembers, and donating toys to the Salvation Army's Holiday Toy Drive.
Over the past three season, Laughton has helped raise nearly $75,000 in donations to causes helping the LGBTQ+ community, while he and his wife Chloe have personally donated $20,000 to causes close to their hearts.
