Eric Hartline-USA TODAY Sports - Referee Incorrectly Blows Whistle, Costing Flyers Lead Against Capitals

The Philadelphia Flyers looked like they had taken a massive 1-0 lead over the Washington Capitals, but the referee incorrectly blew his whistle.

Capitals goalie Charlie Lindgren stopped the puck, which went high into the air. The official lost sight of the puck, so he blew the whistle. There was a lot of confusion, as a review deemed the play dead when the whistle was blown.

According to the official NHL Situation Room, the explanation for why the goal was not given is as follows:

"The Referee informed the Situation Room he blew his whistle to stop play when he lost sight of the puck, before it entered the Washington net."

Flyers fans obviously weren't happy and started a loud "ref, you suck" chant after the play was deemed "dead" by the referee.

The Capitals took the lead on an Alex Ovechkin goal later in the first period. If the Flyers don't win in regulation time, they are eliminated from playoff contention.
