The Philadelphia Flyers are officially eliminated from playoff contention as the Detroit Red Wings went to overtime against the Montreal Canadiens.
While the Flyers were tied at one against the Washington Capitals, the Red Wings scored a miracle goal with 3.3 seconds left off the stick of David Perron.
To have a chance, the Flyers needed to beat the Capitals in regulation, the Red Wings lose in regulation, and the Pittsburgh Penguins lose in regulation tomorrow. The Red Wings have 90 points this season, so the Flyers mathematically can't catch them in the standings.
Not long after the Red Wings scored to tie the game, the Flyers pulled their goalie in a desperate move to win and gave up an empty-net goal with three minutes left in the third period.
The Capitals are reaping the benefits, as they had the most control. They were able to stave off a Flyers push with the goalie pulled and win 2-1, giving them the final wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference. They will take on the New York Rangers in the first round.
