The Pittsburgh Penguins have gone on a good run and given themselves a great opportunity to reach the postseason.

Drew O'Connor has stepped up to become a valuable middle six winger for the Pittsburgh Penguins this season.

PITTSBURGH – The NHL has just about reached it’s midway point of the 2023-24 season and the current run from the Pittsburgh Penguins has put them in the best spot they’ve seen all year. With a 20-15-4 record, and despite still sitting outside of a wild card spot, the Penguins have reached new highs to make the postseason.

According to moneypuck.com, the Penguins hold an 82.2% chance of reaching the playoffs, the highest those odds have been in some time. That’s the 14th-highest percentage in the NHL and the last team before a massive drop-off in chances. The next team in line is the Seattle Kraken with a 49.1% chance.

Based on the current standings, the Penguins are still technically seventh in the Metropolitan Division, but in a four-way tie with 44 standings points. The Penguins are knotted with the New Jersey Devils, Washington Capitals, and Detroit Red Wings.

All those teams but the Devils has much lower odds to make the postseason according to Money Puck’s predictions chart. The Devils are just above the Penguins at 86.3%, the Red Wings follow up with a 25% chance, and the Capitals sit way down at 12.8%.

The Philadelphia Flyers are currently third in the Metro yet have slimmer odds at 37.3%. The Penguins just defeated the Flyer handily in their last meeting.

Ever since putting an end to a four-game losing streak in December, the Penguins have been one of the hottest teams in the NHL with a 9-3-1 record. They’ve yet been able to make the jump into playoff positioning, but the odds are in their favor.
