The Detroit Red Wings may be sniffing around the Pittsburgh Penguins to help their goalie situation.
PITTSBURGH – One of the biggest questions once again surrounding the Pittsburgh Penguins this offseason is how they will shape their goaltending in the upcoming season. In a surprising move, they extended netminder Alex Nedeljkovic to a two-year contract.
Nedeljkovic essentially stole the starting goalie job from Tristan Jarry down the stretch of the season, forcing many to wonder if Jarry has a future in Pittsburgh. Not long after Nedeljkovic's signing, word started that the Penguins may be hanging Jarry out for a trade.
First reported by Elliotte Friedman on the 32 Thoughts Podcast, he doubled down on the Jarry trade topic, adding a team that may be interested. On the Jeff Marek Show, Friedman said that the Detroit Red Wings may be sniffing around.
Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman recently traded away defenseman Jake Walman to clear some salary cap space. Friedman believes that space could be used on a goalie.
“He didn’t want somebody for short term,” Friedman said. “I’ve also heard Tristan Jarry’s name out there.”
Any team that takes on Jarry certainly wouldn’t be getting him on a short-term basis. Jarry has four years remaining on his current contract, which earns him over $5 million annually.
In the final days of the season, the Red Wings were right next to the Penguins in the playoff race, but they both ultimately missed their chance. A big reason for the Red Wings' failure was their goaltending situation.
The Red Wings are hunting for a goalie, and the Penguins may be able to provide one.
