The Penguins could add a bonafide playmaker in the 2024 NHL Draft.

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Penguins are counting on Kyle Dubas to hit big in the 2024 NHL Draft. Without a first-round pick, the team would love to move up or acquire one. The team is reportedly interested in shopping goaltender Tristan Jarry, which could net them a high pick in return. 

Otherwise, the team must wait until picks 44 and 46 to add prospects to the system. The 2024 draft class is stacked with talent, so there is reason to believe the Pens will find an intriguing player. One name to keep an eye on is forward Luke Misa out of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL).

Player Breakdown

Misa is one of the most exciting forwards in this draft class. He described himself as a Jesper Bratt-type player, and that feels very appropriate. Standing at 5'10, Misa is a speedy and agile skater with a knack for creating plays. He took a huge step forward this past season in the OHL, registering 81 points in 66 games. He looked dynamic with Mississauga, like he has the makings of a future middle-six center.

The thing that jumps out about his game is how quickly he transitions from defense to offense. He moves the puck well on the break out but can also support his teammates. His speed disarms opposing defenders and creates scoring lanes.

What Needs to Improve:

The big thing that Misa needs to improve is his shooting ability. He has a decent, maybe even good, shot, but it's not NHL caliber yet. He needs to bulk up and add strength, like nearly every 18 year-old prospect, but that isn't a concern. His speed and tenacity will help him progress, but he won't hit his true potential until he develops his shot further.

Misa is a longer-term projection, and wouldn't impact the Penguins for a few more years. His upside is can't miss, but consistency is the key for him. Another season or two in juniors and some time in the AHL will be needed, but if he puts it together he will be a can't miss prospect in due time.
