Multiple Penguins Take Lead in Scoring Race

Evgeni Malkin and Jake Guentzel are early leaders in scoring for more than just the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic talks after getting his first win in his debut joining the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The Pittsburgh Penguins are only three games into the season, but they have a pair of skaters off to some of the best starts across the NHL.

After just three games, Penguins’ forwards Evgeni Malkin and Jake Guentzel have each recorded six points; Malkin with two goals and four assists and Guetnzel notching a goal and five helpers.

Their six points is good to sit in a four-way tie for most points in the NHL.

Also picking up six points to start the season is Toronto Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews who has recorded two hat tricks in two games.

Vancouver Canucks forward Elias Pettersson caps off the four-player race with a goal and five assists in a pair of games played.

“I hope tomorrow the season is over and I win Hart Trophy,” Malkin joked following a comeback win over Calgary Flames.

While there is a ton of hockey still to be played on the season, Malkin is off to a dominating start.

For Guentzel, it wasn’t certain he would even start the season on time; an offseason ankle surgery was supposed to keep him on the shelf for at least the first two weeks.

After missing all of the preseason and most of training camp, Guentzel returned on opening night and was up to speed right away.

Now, three games in, he’s feeling comfortable and ready to earn a big new contract.

The Penguins stumbled out of the gate with a loss in the opening game, but have bounced back nicely with wins in back-to-back games.
