A former Pittsburgh Penguins forward will have his contract terminated by the New York Rangers.
PITTSBURGH – Nick Bonino is a two-time Stanley Cup champion with the Pittsburgh Penguins but will once again become a free agent. After signing a one-year deal with the New York Rangers, Bonino has been placed on waivers with the purposes of contract termination.
Bonino is a 35-year-old who previously cleared waivers but was unwilling to report to the Rangers’ AHL affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack. According to Peter Baugh of the Athletic, Bonino asked the Rangers to terminate his deal.
At 35 and not much production in 45 games played this year (1G-4A), the future might be uncertain for the former champion. Bonino has had a stellar career, but this could be the first step toward retirement.
Bonino was a key member of the Penguins depth for the 2016 and 2017 seasons that saw them win the Stanley Cup in back-to-back seasons. In 2023, then-Penguins general manager Ron Hextall acquired Bonino at the deadline.
His second stint in Pittsburgh didn’t last long, as after just his third game, he suffered a lacerated kidney and missed the remainder of the season.
Over the course of his career, Bonino has played in 868 career games with 158 goals and 199 assists for 358 total points.
