The Pittsburgh Penguins secure two more points to move back into the Eastern Conference wild card race.

PITTSBURGH – It wasn’t a perfect game, but the Pittsburgh Penguins found a way to extend their point streak to an astonishing 10 games and work their way back into a playoff spot. Thanks to an overtime win over the Detroit Red Wings and a key loss from the Washington Capitals, the Penguins sit in the Eastern Conference’s second wild card spot.

According to moneypuck.com, after their big overtime win, the Penguins have a 57.8% chance of making the playoffs. The Penguins entered the game with 42.4% odds and knew there was a lot on the line against the Red Wings.

This game was arguably the biggest of both the Penguins and Red Wings seasons, with massive playoff implications.

While they squeezed out a point, the Red Wings still saw their playoff odds drop from 24.3% to 15.4%. Those are the lowest odds of the Eastern Conference teams still in the running. The other teams still floating around are the Philadelphia Flyers, Washington Capitals, and New York Islanders.

The Flyers ended an eight-game losing streak improving their odds to 16.4%. The Capitals suffered a harsh defeat and saw their number drop to 18.8%.

The Islanders have emerged as the front-runner in the race for the time being. Another win for them pushed their playoff odds to a boisterous 91.5%.

The Penguins hold the second playoff spot and the second-best odds to make the playoffs despite sitting well out of the race just two weeks ago. Sidney Crosby's and Alex Nedeljkovic's play has been the stuff of legend as the Penguins look to finalize an improbable run to the big dance.
