The Pittsburgh Penguins got back in the win column with a dominating win over the Colorado Avalanche.

With the second game of their four-game home stand, the Pittsburgh Penguins had a huge test ahead of them in the Colorado Avalanche.

Not only were the Penguins trying to end a three-game losing streak, but the Avalanche entered Pittsburgh with a perfect 6-0-0 record to start the year.

With one team looking to find the right path and another looking to maintain some early momentum, this wasn’t going to be an easy night for anyone.

The Penguins looked up to the task early when Reilly Smith put home his third goal of the year just a hair after a power play opportunity came to an end.

With the second power play unit still on the ice, a fumbled puck from Rickard Rakell found its way to Smith who didn’t miss his opportunity.

Early chemistry has been brewing between Smith and Evgeni Malkin and that continued later in the opening frame.

The two connected to give the Penguins a 2-0 lead thanks to some extraordinary patience form Malkin.

For the second straight game, the Penguins put together a solid first period of hockey, but would have to maintain that momentum if they wanted to stand a chance against the Avalanche.

Exactly six minutes into the middle frame, the Penguins did exactly what they needed to do and got an offensive strike from the depth.

The third line stepped up to give the Penguins a 3-0 lead; a poke check assist from Radim Zohorna set up Lars Eller with a wide open net for his first as a Penguin.

The Penguins spent the last portion of the second period killing off a Malkin double-minor for high sticking.

Tristan Jarry made a number of good saves and the Penguins penalty killers were coming up huge to send them into the second intermission with their 3-0 lead.

The Penguins killed off another penalty in the early stages of the third period and they carried that momentum to add to their already distant lead.

Sidney Crosby potted the Penguins fourth goal of the game and forced the Avalanche to pull starting goalie Alexandar Georgiev.

The Penguins would hold on to their lead and put an end to the Avalanche's perfect start to the season.

Jarry posted his second shutout of the season with an even 30 saves in the 4-0 victory.
