The Pittsburgh Penguins are on the verge of making NHL history with their run to the postseason.
PITTSBURGH – After four months of struggling and failing to climb the standings, the Pittsburgh Penguins have found their way back into playoff positioning. A massive win over the Tampa Bay Lightning elevated the Penguins to the Eastern Conference’s second wild card spot with five games to play in the season.
While the Penguins are totally in the clear, the odds are finally in their favor, and they are setting themselves up to make history. Heading into their final 11 games of the season, the Penguins were nine points out of a playoff spot.
According to the NHL, if the Penguins make the postseason, it will mark the largest deficit ever overcome by a team in their final 11 games. Riding a 6-0-2 run, the Penguins have secured a standings point in eight straight games and reclaimed possession of their fate.
The final five games of the Penguins' season still won’t be easy, but they have a pair of crucial contests awaiting them. Surrounded by three playoff teams, the Penguins will take on the Detroit Red Wings and New York Islanders.
The Red Wings and Islanders are two of the handful of teams in the tight Eastern Conference playoff race. If the Penguins can secure huge wins over those squads, they are more than certainly securing a playoff berth.
The Penguins never gave up hope even when the odds were at their lowest. The team stuck to their game and are now in the driver's seat as the playoffs approach.
