One of the under-appreciated prospects in the Pittsburgh Penguins system has excelled in the Frozen Four Tournament.
PITTSBURGH – Over the last few seasons, the Pittsburgh Penguins have become notorious for having one of the worst-ranked prospect pools in the NHL. New general manager Kyle Dubas has made it a point to improve the youthful depth within the Penguins organization, and he’s done a fair job of building for the future.
There may be some more hope coming as an often-forgotten name in the Penguins prospect pool has come up in big moments for his college team. Tristan Broz was a second-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft and currently plays for the University of Denver.
Broz and the Pioneers are heading to the 2024 NCAA Frozen Four Tournament's championship round, thanks mainly to his timely scoring.
In three tournament games, Broz has scored two goals, both of which were overtime winners. In the opening round against the University of Massachusetts, Broz scored in double overtime to give Dever a 2-1 win.
Most recently, in a semi-final match against the second-seeded Bostin University, Broz scored his second overtime goal of the tournament. Denver is heading to the Frozen Four Final thanks to a perfect shot from Broz, taking down Boston University.
The Pioneers will go on to face Boston College in the Final.
Since transferring to Denver from the University of Minnesota, Broz has gotten lost in the shuffle of Penguins prospects. It’s possible some steps in the wrong direction were taken, but maybe a few huge goals in college hockey’s biggest tournament can put him back on the map.
Broz currently does not have a deal signed with the Penguins, but it’s possible Broz is still one of the better prospects in their system.
