Penguins Sign Defenseman Dmitri Samorukov

The Pittsburgh Penguins have added another defenseman following slew of blue line injuries.

Pittsburgh Penguins' defenseman Erik Karlsson discusses his growing chemistry with Sidney Crosby in their first season together.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have announced the signing of defenseman Dmitri Samorukov to a one-year contract. The left-shot defenseman has three games of NHL experience but has spent the early portion of this season with the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins of the AHL.

Samorukov has five points (1G-4A) in 15 games for the Penguins' affiliate this season and joins a long list of depth options at that level for the organization.

A third-round pick in the 2017 draft, Samorukov spent the first five years of his career with the Edmonton Oilers before being traded to the St. Louis Blues at the beginning of last season.

The 24-year-old blue-liner played 69 games with the AHL's Springfield Thunderbirds last season, scoring 20 points (4G-16A) and finishing with 28 penalty minutes. He played two games at the NHL level with the St. Louis Blues.

Samorukov becomes another depth option for the Penguins, who suffered a pair of injuries to defensemen over the past week. P.O. Joseph is out indefinitely with a lower-body injury, and now Chad Ruhwedel is week-to-week with a lower-body injury.

The Penguins could elevate John Ludvig from long-term injured reserve for tomorrow night's game against the New York Rangers, but Samorukov becomes a name to watch as the Penguins dip into their reserves on defense.
